The locals have an epic and glorious past rooted in agriculture. Some believe Pietraperzia is the ancient Petra mentioned by Cicero in the Verrine Orations, and owes its name to the Romans. The Normans, led by the noble Barresi family, played a significant role in its history. Abbo Barresi, the founder of the Barresi family, built the Norman Castle of Pietraperzia.
